Lizzie Ridout An exercise in collecting beginnings
In 2006/07 Lizzie Ridout was the British Library’s Pearson Creative Research Fellow. She worked as a self-professed ‘domestic archaeologist’ in the collections gathering references to mundane and familiar objects and rituals, with bizarre or poetic twists. ‘Homeward Bound’, the resultant publication, celebrates the ingenuity and poignancy of the human condition and brings together a series of starting points to be used for new visual work, by her but also by others. Lizzie will talk about a selection of her discoveries: from ghosts of stockings to electric tablecloths and creating collections that are caught between the real and the imagined.
LIzzie is based in Cornwall where she has a studio and works as an artist and designer, whilst also lecturing at various universities in the south west. She studied graphic design at Falmouth College of Arts and later a Masters in Communication Art and Design at the Royal College of Art.
