Clearcut to paper: logging, paper, and design in a small town on Vancouver Island

The abundant natural resources in and around Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada are the raw materials of print design. Despite this fact, this area of the world is profoundly cut off from design discourse. This presentation will explore the environmental impacts of two communities that rarely interact but are deeply intertwined: the international logging and paper industries, and graphic design.

Emily Luce is an artist, designer, and assistant professor. Her work addresses concerns of mass transporation, consumption, crowds, and social action. She has presented her work in North America and Europe, and in 2007, was honoured to receive the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations Early Career Award.
